इसलिए जिसकी संवेदना जितनी अधिक होती है और जिसकी भावनाएं जितनी अधिक संस्कारित और मानवीय होती हैं, वह उतने ही लंबे प्रीतिभाव से दूसरे का सुख या दुख बांट पाता है। अगर ऐसा नहीं होता तब व्यक्ति अपने से भिन्न किसी का सुख देखकर उसके प्रति या तो ईष्र्यालु हो जाता है या फिर क्रोधभाव से अभिभूत होकर अकारण ही सुखी व्यक्ति को हानि पहुंचाने का प्रयास करने लग जाता है।
इसी तरह से संकुचित संवेदना वाला व्यक्ति किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति को दुखी देखकर भी उसके प्रति करुण न होकर कठोर भाव वाला ही बना रहता है और इस विचार से संतुष्ट होने का प्रयास करता है कि इस व्यक्ति के साथ प्राकृतिक न्याय ठीक ही हुआ और अब ऊंट पहाड़ के नीचे आया है।
संस्कृत व्याकरण के अनुसार संवेदना शब्द में दो पद हैं। एक पद है सम् और दूसरा पद है-वेदना। इसमें ‘सम् का अर्थ है समान और वेदना का अर्थ है-अनुभूति। जब किसी एक व्यक्ति की अनुभूति किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति के सुख-दुख के साथ जुड़ जाती है तो उसे संवेदना कहते हैं। यह मनुष्य का एक उत्तम गुण कहा जाता है जिसके मूल में करुणा, अलोभ और समत्व की भावना मुख्य रूप से रहती है। जब कोई व्यक्ति किसी दूसरे के दुख से दुखी होता है तो ऐसी स्थिति तभी आती है जब हममें करुणा होती है और हम अपना कुछ त्याग करके दुखी व्यक्ति के लिए सहयोग करने को तत्पर होते हैं। संवेदना का सबसे बड़ा लाभ यह है कि इससे व्यक्ति एक दूसरे के साथ जुड़ा महसूस करने लगता है और इससे सह अस्तित्व का सृजन होता है। यह समाज को एकसूत्र में बांधने का सवरेत्तम गुण है और आज के समय में इसका सर्वाधिक मूल्य और महत्व है।
